Media and the Public Sphere

Mass media plays a crucial role in forming and reflecting public opinion, it actually connects the world to individuals and reproduce the self-image of society. Therefore the media performs the most critical function in contributing in the make up of the public sphere or society. the media are not a neutral participant, instead they are either a legitimiser of the status quo or an innovator of the existing social equilibrium. The mutual relationship between the state and the media, either as oppositional or as complementary is influenced by the nature of intervention of the state in the public sphere.

Media is considered as an important tool for the public sphere. Televiosn as its illutrated in your blogrepresents an imortnad medium for public sphere. When watching a program we always open a discussion at the end about it and discuss its issues and argue about it. Internet also is becoming a common tool for public opinions and discussion such as: political discussions.

Debating about already perceived issues like movies or documentaries means that the spectators have been impacted by what was presented and been informed. I would say that discussing an issue right after watching it is a normal act because it is still on the context of its emission, but what really creates a public sphere is having significant discussions and debates about issues outside their contexts and having people with different classes, gender, and races to share the same interests regarding the issue and hold conversations about a certain topic.
